Yearning

Updated: Nov 13, 2023

Week 4

Day1

P.R.A.Y.

Y is for yearning

This is our fourth and final week taking a deep dive into prayer.

Yearning-

A yearning is a strong desire. If you have a yearning to travel in Africa, it means that you dream about it and intensely hope that one day you'll end up there. A strong longing for something is a yearning for it.

Psalm 84:2

I long and yearn for the courts of the Lord; my heart and flesh cry out for the living God. HCSB

Psalm 130:6

I yearn for the Lord, more than watchmen do for the morning, yes, more than watchmen do for the morning. NET

Independence

For many, we yearn in order to recognize what is lacking in our lives so that we can imagine a brighter and fuller future.

God created us for relationship with Him. As some have said, “There is a God sized hole inside of us that can only be filled with Him.”

As children, we have a natural desire for our parents. When we are separated from them, it is natural to yearn for them. As infants we cry for them. Oftentimes we are only comforted by their presence.

As we grow up into toddlerhood, we venture away a little further, but as soon as we fall down or are scared we cry for Mommy or Daddy.

Throughout our teenage years we venture off further and further until we are independent.

The funny thing about independence in adult children is that as soon as they run into trouble, who do they go to for advice or help?

Most often their parents.

We have a built in YEARNing for more of God. Just as a child for their parents.

Our life is filled with distractions that lead us away from God.

Without taking time out for prayer, we are left empty seeking comfort substitutes. Those substitutes come in different forms for each of us.

Seek Him first.

Prayer is a conversation. A tool for communion with your Heavenly Father. The more you invest in your conversation with God, the more you will be aware of growth and change that need to take place in your life.

These changes are designed to bring us into closer relationship with our Father.

Yearn for His presence and learn to receive comfort from your Father.

Action Step:

Ask Holy Spirit to show you what your go to comfort source is.

Once you know, then take action to pray every time you seek comfort there instead of with Jesus.
