Two Masters

Day4

1Samuel 22

Week 37

“The king said to Doeg, “You turn and fall upon the priests.” And Doeg the Edomite turned and struck the priests and killed on that day eighty-five men who wore a linen ephod. And Nob, the city of the priests, he struck with the edge of the sword. Both men and women, children and babies, oxen, donkeys, and sheep, he struck with the edge of the sword.”

‭‭1 Samuel‬ ‭22‬:‭18‬-‭19‬ ‭MEV‬‬

Cross references

1 Samuel 15:3

Two Masters

Doeg was at Nob performing a religious ritual obligation the day that David sought help from the priest.

He knew that the priest was innocent and that David lied to him.

Have you ever had to make a decision that would throw someone else under the bus, but save yourself and make yourself look good?

Most likely we have all done that somewhere along the line.

Who was Doeg serving?

He fulfilled his religious obligation. That would make it appear that he served God. We also know that he worked for Saul, so he also served Saul.

Doeg was attempting to serve two masters.

When faced with a choice between speaking out in favor of the priest’s innocence ( serving God)or obeying Saul’s orders, Doeg’s choice says a lot. Not only did he follow Saul’s orders, but he went to the extreme and wiped out everyone.

It appears that he was still serving two masters. Saul and himself. He would receive land and money for his extra efforts.

It is impossible to serve two masters. Jesus said that we would love one and hate the other.

Where does your loyalty lie?

Action Step

Ask God to search your heart and show you if you ate attempting to serve two masters.

Stay in this space a moment and receive what God had for you.
