Song Of The Bow

The book of Jashar is most likely a book of records, so to speak of Philistine kings and great warriors, speaking highly of their victories. Since the Philistines had defeated Saul’s army at Mount Gilboa, and David was at this time living in asylum in the land of the Philistine’s, it would make sense that it be recorded in the Philistine’s book of feats.

That being said, the book of Jashar is mentioned one other time in the Bible in Joshua as a historical reference to the sun standing still, but this mysterious book has never been found.

The lesson to be taught from the “Song of the Bow” is one we can all learn from today.

The bow is dependent upon the archer.

We are the bow and God is the Archer.

The error that led to Saul’s ruin was esteeming his own strength to be sufficient. But there is no strength without dependence, for strength is not to be found in us, but rather in Him whose strength is infallible on our behalf.

A bow must be bent and stretched in such a way that it does not break, while supplying a source of power when the bend is released.

Have you ever felt like God is bending or stretching you?

The very design of an archer and bow is one of precision. The bow must surrender its will to the archer. If there is too much resistance, or too much tension, the aim will be off.

The arrow will not hit the target and therefore the purpose isn’t accomplished.

Are you tense or resistant to God’s plan for you?

What goes up must come down. We can see this in the trajectory of an arc—the same word also means rainbow.

Thus, Saul had risen to power through strength, but he became bent with the madness of self-importance, forgetting that Yehweh was the true power of Israel.

Saul fell back to earth as a defeated human being.

He who lives by the sword will die by the sword.

(Matthew 26:52)

The Man Jesus Christ is the example of this. He did not seek strength except in God.

He was fully dependent on His Father and fully surrendered even unto death.

God put His bow in the clouds for us as a reminder of His faithfulness.

He sent His bow (Jesus) to model humility, surrender, and complete dependence.

We are also His bow, created and designed with His purpose.

God is depending on us to depend on Him.

Action Step

”Trust only in God every moment! Tell him all your troubles and pour out your heart-longings to him. Believe me when I tell you—he will help you! Pause in his presence“

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭62‬:‭8‬ ‭TPT‬‬

Do you feel stretched beyond what you can bear?

What do you need to trust Him with today?

Tell Him all your concerns and release the tension into His capable hands.
