Over Zealous

Day5

Week21

1Samuel 14

“Saul did something really foolish that day. He addressed the army: “A curse on the man who eats anything before evening, before I’ve wreaked vengeance on my enemies!” None of them ate a thing all day. There were honeycombs here and there in the fields. But no one so much as put his finger in the honey to taste it, for the soldiers to a man feared the curse. But Jonathan hadn’t heard his father put the army under oath. He stuck the tip of his staff into some honey and ate it. Refreshed, his eyes lit up with renewed vigor.”

Over Zealous

Have you ever been so excited or so desperate that you foolishly made a promise to God?

If you get me out of this mess, I will…..

I’m going to fast for 40 days….

I will eat nothing for 3 days….

I’m so grateful that as soon as I get paid I am going to give $100, 1000, 20%….

Saul was not only excited to see God’s favor, he was also eager to get moving and finish off the enemy that had been humiliating him and the people for so long! He wanted to take action and gain glory.

The greater lesson here is that Saul was creating a pattern of walking according to his feelings.

He was leading the people foolishly by what he could see and hear, not by trusting in God.

Always consider the cost before making a promise!

Action Step

Are you faced with a decision today?

Should I refinance my house?

Should I take out a consolidation loan?

Should I go to college?

Should I start a strict diet?

Whatever it is….. Seek God and He will make your path straight no matter what it looks like.

Trust in the Lord with ALL your heart and lean NOT on your own understanding.

Proverbs 3:5
