Look Again

Purity is devoting your whole heart to your spouse or if unmarried to God, not allowing anything or anyone to infiltrate that scared place.

We need to look again at the meaning of purity.

What does it look like to you?

Purity is not just a reference to sexual intimacy and monogamy.

Purity in a marriage helps to promote confidence and unity between partners, in turn, strengthening each of their relationships with God.

Purity in singleness promotes confidence and unity with God.

If you are married,

Pursue physical purity by constantly pursuing your spouse romantically and intimately. And only with your spouse! Invite Holy Spirit to guide each of you into healing past brokenness in this area.

In singleness, do not pursue physical intimacy.

Guard your mind by giving attention to what you watch on TV , listen to or read.

Keep your mind fixed on Jesus. Constantly pursue intimacy with Jesus by singing praises to Him, talking with Him and reading His Word. Remember how He has been faithful to you in the past and thank Him often.

For the married;

Pursue emotional purity by being open and vulnerable with your spouse. Be involved in deep, meaningful conversations. Share your feelings. Be honest.

Allow Holy Spirit to comfort each of you as you become more open.

For those who are single, do these things with God and you can ask a trusted friend to help keep you accountable.

For the married;

Pursue spiritual purity by praying for your spouse and by encouraging your spouse in their relationship with God. Read God’s Word together and fast together for understanding.

In singleness;

Pray for others in your life and encourage a friend in their relationship with God. Focus on who God reveals to you to pray for or witness to. Ask a friend to study with you and fast together for understanding.

When purity is the goal, the relationship is secure and the relationship thrives.

So many times in scripture, adultery is referenced to in terms of our spiritual relationship with God.

As we look again at purity and immortality, it is clear to see that anything we allow to be more important to us than God fits in these categories.

Just like in marriage, anything we put as more important than our spouse is one step toward adultery; the same is true with our relationship with Jesus.

Action Step

Ask God to open your eyes and look again.

Jot down anything that surprises you about today’s lesson.

Purify our hearts, Lord.
