Day2

Week27

1 Samuel 16

“So the servants of Saul said to him, “See, an evil spirit from God troubles you. Let our Lord now tell your servants, who are before you, that they might seek out a man experienced in playing the lyre. And it will come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is on you, that he will play with his hand, and you will be well.” Saul said to his servants, “Find me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me.” Then one from the servants answered, and said, “I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is experienced in playing music, a mighty man of valor, a man of battle, and skillful in words, even a man of fine appearance. And the Lord is with him.””

Insignificant

The young, shepherd, boy, David was insignificant to his father and not even considered.

Now we find David being described as a mighty man of valor and a man of battle.

In order to go to battle one must be at least 20 years old.

It would seem that some time has lapsed since David was anointed.

It may be that the battle between David and Goliath has already taken place which would’ve given David this reputation.

There is no clear timeline for the early years of David’s life, only that he was 30 when he became king.

I see a life of humility. David tended sheep for his father, he was a skillful musician, he was anointed to be king and yet a humble soldier, a giant slayer and he became armor bearer to the king all the while going back and forth to tend sheep and care for his aging father, and all this before the age of 30.

David knew his calling and yet he patiently waited for God to promote him.

What a lesson!

Action Step

Are you waiting?

You are not insignificant in God’s eyes.

Don’t lose heart. God will see that His will is accomplished.

Let this remind us to humble ourselves in the sight of the Lord, so that He may lift us up in due time.
