Ignorance Is Bliss

Day2

Week 9

Hebrews 9

”Now when these things were thus ordained, the priests would regularly go into the first part, conducting the services of God. But only the high priest went into the second part once a year, not without blood, which he offered for himself and for the sins of the people, committed in ignorance. The Holy Spirit was signifying through this that the way into the Most Holy Place was not yet revealed, because the first part of the tabernacle was still standing. This is an illustration for the present time, showing that the gifts and sacrifices offered could not perfect the conscience of those who worshipped, since they are concerned only with foods and drinks, ceremonial cleansings, and fleshly ordinances imposed until the time of reformation.“

Ignorance Is Bliss

Are you familiar with the saying, “Ignorance is bliss.”?

Ignorance is bliss until it isn't.

It is implied that what you don’t know won’t hurt you.

God’s Word tells us in Hosea 4:6 “my people die daily for lack of knowledge.”

Under the Old Covenant, on the Day of Atonement, once a year, the High Priest would offer sacrifice for the sins committed in ignorance.

It would stand to reason that if a sacrifice had to be made for that, then whether you know it or not, sin is still sin and has to be atoned for.

The ancient Jewish Rabbis wrote of how the high priest did not prolong his prayer in the Holy of Holies on the Day of Atonement, because it might make the people think he had been killed.

When he came out he threw a party for all his friends, because he had emerged safely from the presence of God.

Imagine that kind of pressure!

We have access to God at all times without fear of death.

Even the priest did not.

If the cleansing is incomplete for the priest, how much more for the person the priest worked on behalf of!

We have a better promise through our High Priest, Jesus!

Isn’t it wonderful to walk with a clean conscience?

Action Step

Praise Jesus for our new covenant!
