Day3
Week 1
1 Samuel
“When the day came that Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions [of the sacrificial meat] to Peninnah his wife and all her sons and daughters. But to Hannah he would give a double portion, because he loved Hannah, but the Lord had given her no children.”

Double Portion
We can feel the tension building in our story. Elkanah cares for his family, but he loves Hannah and favors her above the rest.
Showing favorites is a recipe for disaster. Can you feel the bitterness and resentment building in the story.
Peninnah is unloved even though she has given Elkanah many children.
Hannah is full of sorrow because she has no children, but she is loved and is treated much better than Peninnah.
What a tangled web of drama that is unfolding here.
Imagine how the children feel watching their father pick favorites.
This reminds me of Jesus saying, “You can’t serve two masters. You will love one and hate the other.”(He was referring to the love of money, but the principle is the same.)
Hannah was fixated on what she was lacking. She could not see all the blessings that were given her. Not even a double portion because she was focused on what she did not have. Trapped by comparison.
Are you focused on your need, want or lack of something?
Flip your focus and thank God for what you already have!
Could there be a double portion in your life that you are missing?
1Timothy 6:6
Godliness with contentment is great gain.
“I do not speak because I have need, for I have learned in whatever state I am to be content. I know both how to face humble circumstances and how to have abundance. Everywhere and in all things I have learned the secret, both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things because of Christ who strengthens me.”
Philippians 4:11-13 MEV
