Delivering Bad News

Day4

Week6

1 Samuel

“Adonai said to Sh’mu’el, “Look! I am going to do something in Isra’el that will make both ears of everyone who hears about it tingle. On that day I will do against ‘Eli everything I have said with regard to his family, from beginning to end. For I have told him that I will execute judgment against his family forever, because of his wickedness in not rebuking his sons, even though he knew that they had brought a curse on themselves. Therefore I have sworn to the family of ‘Eli that the wickedness of ‘Eli’s family will never be atoned for by any sacrifice or offering.” Sh’mu’el lay there until morning; then he opened the doors of the house of Adonai. But Sh’mu’el was afraid to tell ‘Eli the vision.”

Delivering Bad News

Have you ever been the one who had to deliver bad news?

Maybe you needed to discipline your children like Eli and you found it difficult because of their reactions. After all you love them and you don’t want to hurt their feelings or you are afraid of their reaction.

I am reminded of Jonah’s story. God told him to go to Ninevah, which was seemingly a death wish. After some serious persuasion ( a ride in the belly of a large fish) Jonah delivers the bad news of coming destruction. To his surprise, the people repented and God showed mercy.

Jonah was angry about it. He felt foolish because he told of destruction and mercy showed up instead.

God’s ways are not our ways.

Human reasoning is no match for God.

Has God been dealing with you to talk to someone about Him and about the choices they have been making?

Whoever it is, we need to trust God and be obedient no matter the cost.

The enemy will always magnify the seemingly high price of obedience.

Remember Jonah? He thought he would be killed, but instead the people received God.

Think of Eli. He chose to honor his fear of his son’s response rather than be obedient to God.

We have a choice to make.

Family relationships are important, but obedience to God should be our utmost priority.

Will you remain silent?

Action Step

I believe Holy Spirit is already dealing with each of us in this area.

It is time to take action and speak up
