Day5

1Samuel 27

Week 44

“Now David would leave neither a man nor a woman alive, to bring tidings to Gath, saying, “Lest they should tell on us, saying, ‘Thus David has done.’ ” This was his practice all the days which he lived in the country of the Philistines. And Achish believed David, saying, “He has surely become a stench to his people Israel. Therefore he will be my servant forever.””

‭‭1 Samuel‬ ‭27‬:‭11‬-‭12‬ ‭MEV‬‬

Cover Up

Why did David utterly destroy these people?

After so many decades he may not have understood why.

History gives us an hindsight advantage.

These people had treated the Israelites with contempt and attacked their women and children when they were helpless fleeing Egypt. These people had also refused to give up their sinful customs such as, worshiping other gods with sex parties, sacrificing children, marrying multiple women, turning people into slaves etc.

Nineveh repented in forty days. (Jonah)

These peoples that David attacked and killed were given 400 years to turn to God and they did not repent. Their influence on God’s people was evident.

God gives us ample time to repent. He is merciful. Judgement is the result of continuous rebellion and refusal to turn to God.

It is interesting to notice that David had adopted some of the customs of the very peoples he destroyed. He took multiple wives and servants. He wasn’t the only one. When everyone else is doing it, it is easy to cover up or camouflage our sin. It becomes easy to ignore or overlook.

In our culture today, sin is running rampant and celebrated. The influence is evident.

Will you choose to cover up?

Action Step

Father, expose to me any hidden sin that I have allowed to be covered up in my life. Forgive me for blending in to the culture around me. Thank You for strength to be pruned by You. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
