Covenant of Friendship

Day3

1 Samuel 18

Week31

“Now it came to pass, when David had finished speaking to Saul, Jonathan’s soul was knit to David’s soul, and Jonathan loved him as himself. Saul took him that day and did not let him return to his father’s house. Then Jonathan cut a covenant with David, because he loved him as himself. Jonathan stripped off the robe that was on him and gave it to David, along with his armor: his sword, bow and belt.”

‭‭1 Samuel‬ ‭18‬:‭1‬-‭4‬ ‭TLV‬‬

“By the time David had finished speaking to Sha’ul, (Saul) Y’honatan (Jonathan) found himself inwardly drawn by David’s character, so that Y’honatan (Jonathan) loved him as he did himself. CJB(Complete Jewish Bible)

Covenant of Friendship

There is a misinterpretation that has been spread stating that David and Jonathan were homosexuals.

We must be careful to rightly divide the Word.

(2 Timothy 2:15)

Ahab- is one of the words for love in Hebrew here it is used to describe David and Jonathan’s love for each other. This is the same word used for all of Israel’s love for David.

Yada- to know- in a sexual manner. This term is never mentioned in regards to the relationship between David and Jonathan.

The Bible very clearly shows the grievous sin’s of David one of which is murder and adultery. David suffered greatly for those sins. If he had been in a homosexual relationship, which is again clearly a sin according to Hebrew law, (Leviticus 18)then there would be record of David and Jonathan suffering for it. Sin is not covered up in the Bible. It is high lighted for our benefit to learn from.

We are not to hate people or look down on them for their sin. All have sinned and need repentance.

Share love and let Jesus take care of the rest

Jonathan took off the robe that was on him and gave it to David, with his armor, even to his sword and his bow and his belt: When Jonathan gave David the robe and his armor, he said by this action, “You will be the next king of Israel. You should be dressed and armed as the crown prince. God’s hand is on you and these rightfully belong to you.” Because Jonathan was surrendered to God he could see the hand of the LORD upon David. He knew David’s destiny and was perfectly willing to set aside his ambition to honor the LORD’s choice.

Our Lord Jesus has thus shown his love to us, that he stripped himself to clothe us, emptied himself to enrich us; nay, he did more than Jonathan, he clothed himself with our rags, whereas Jonathan did not put on David's.

If you look closely, every story in the Bible is a shadow of what Jesus would do and has done for us.

A Covenant Friendship is what Jesus accomplished on the cross and so much more.

Action Step

Love one another as Jesus loved us, that He gave everything up for us; so shall we give up everything for even our enemies.

Who is your enemy today?

How can you show them love?
