Blind Obedience

Week 5

Hebrews 5

“In the days of His flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications with loud cries and tears to Him who was able to save Him from death. He was heard because of His godly fear. Though He was a Son, He learned obedience through the things that He suffered, and being made perfect, He became the source of eternal salvation for all those who obey Him, being designated by God a High Priest according to the order of Melchizedek.”

‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭5‬:‭7‬-‭10‬ ‭MEV‬‬

Blind Obedience

Do you ask a lot of questions?

I’m reminded of the toddler who obsessively asks, “Why?”.

A picture of blind obedience is best displayed by the childhood game of pin the tail on the donkey. A blindfold is placed over the child’s eyes, they are spun around, given a tail with a pin in it and told to move forward and pin the tail on the donkey.

Most children put one hand out reaching for something they can feel.

In my experience, I have never found a child who wouldn’t move.

They all took a chance and blindly obeyed the command to go forward.

Some hesitate, but they all displayed blind obedience, literally.

Life is not a silly child’s game, but Jesus blindly obeyed His Father.

His Father instructed Him to go to the cross, suffer and die. His Father told Him that He would raise Him up again, but how did He know it would really happen?

I have always believed that since Jesus was God, it was somehow easier for Him.

That is simply not true. According to our scripture today, Jesus learned to be obedient through His suffering just like us.

He shed tears of blood agonizing over the task given to Him by His Father.

He begged to be let off the hook, but ultimately He knew that there was no other way for us.

He willingly and blindly obeyed His Father.

How could He do that?

He had a good fear of His Father believing that He was heard because He developed His relationship with Him by praying and studying.

He focused on the track record of His Father’s faithfulness.

He did not listen to the voice of lies and discouragement.

He fought fear with scripture.

Action Step

Blind obedience is not really blind because trust illuminates your sight.

Where does your faith need to be developed today?

Choose a scripture and let it remove your blindfold.
