Day1

Week29

1Samuel 17

“Then Jesse said to David his son, “Take now for your brothers an ephah of this parched grain and these ten loaves and run to the camp to your brothers. Carry these ten cheeses to the captain of their thousand, and look into your brothers’ health, and bring back news of them.” Now Saul, and they, and all Israel’s fighting men were in the Valley of Elah fighting with the Philistines. So David rose up early in the morning and left the flock with a keeper. And he carried away the food and went as Jesse had commanded him. And when he came to the encampment, the army was going out to the battle line, and they shouted a war cry.”

All In A Days Work, Ordinary or Extraordinary?

Reading the Bible can seem like reading a story about an ancient time, but the story tellers often don’t give us the settings so it can be hard to imagine what happened and the hardships they faced because we only have our lifestyles to compare it to.

Imagine 30 kilometers roughly 19 miles, walking at 3 mph. One could travel this far in about 5 hours. Now factor in that David had 17 pounds of grain, 10 loaves of bread and 10 cheeses to carry. He would have also had water and provision for himself as well.

He wasn’t traveling on a prepared sidewalk either. The terrain was rough, mostly barren wilderness and he would have had a donkey or burrow with him to carry the load.

David was a shepherd, so he walked a lot. This was “a day in the life” or an ordinary day for him.

I know, it’s hard to imagine for us.

Do you have an ordinary life? Maybe a mundane job, or a simple routine life?

God is searching for ordinary people doing ordinary things who are faithful.

It’s not up to us to do the extraordinary.

It’s up to us to be faithful and consistent in everything we do.

God takes ordinary faithful people and creates extraordinary opportunities to show off His glory.

Action Step

Examine your life and ask yourself if you are consistently faithful in your everyday duties.

If you are falling short, look up.

Repent and allow God to help you do better.
