A Shepherd At Heart

Day2

1Samuel 25

Week 40

“Now there was a man in Maon whose work was in Carmel. He was a rich man with three thousand sheep and a thousand goats, and he was shearing his sheep in Carmel. The man’s name was Nabal and the name of his wife Abigail. She was a woman of good understanding and beautiful, but the man was harsh and evil in his actions and he was a Calebite. David heard in the wilderness that Nabal was shearing his sheep. So David sent out ten young men, and David said to the young men, “Go up to Carmel, and go to Nabal and greet him in my name. And thus you will you say to him who lives in prosperity, ‘Peace be to you and peace to your house, and to all that you have, peace. “ ‘I have heard that you have shearers. Now your shepherds were with us. We did not harm them nor did they miss anything all the days they were in Carmel. Ask your young men and they will tell you. Therefore let my young men find favor in your eyes, for we have come on a good day. Please give whatever you find at hand to your servants, and to your son David.’ ” When David’s young men came, they spoke to Nabal according to all these words in the name of David, then they waited.”

A Shepherd At Heart

Nabal’s sheep were many and they grazed in the area where David and his men had taken refuge.

David was a shepherd at heart. He was naturally inclined to help and protect. He and his men had protected this man, Nabal’s sheep and his employees,( shepherds) from the pirating Arabs, (Ishmaelite’s) who would travel from place to place stealing and pillaging.

Since David was a shepherd at heart, he had compassion on the other shepherds and commanded his men to protect them. A dangerous undertaking, to say the least. This was, in part; how they provided for themselves while they were in hiding. They gained favor from the people and were given provisions for their services.

Are you waiting on an answer from God?

David did not simply hide and wait. He went to work. He found something to do to serve others in the midst of his “waiting”.

Jesus intends for us all to be a shepherd at heart. He said, “Go and make disciples…” Matthew 28:19.

We are not just sheep to the Great Shepherd. We are called to be shepherd’s, even if it is only to one other person or to our children. Some will have a larger flock, but all of us are called to go out and find the lost sheep and take part in their journey.

What can you do while you are waiting?

Action Step

Are you waiting on a healing? Pray for someone else to be healed.

Are you waiting on a financial breakthrough?

Give to someone else who has a need.(you have something that someone needs).

Are you waiting for your child or loved one to surrender to Jesus?
