Day2
1Samuel 30
Week 47
“David and his men came to the city, and they found it burned with fire, and their wives, their sons, and their daughters taken captive. So David and the people that were with him lifted up their voice and wept until they had no strength in them to weep. Now David’s two wives were taken captive, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess and Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite.”

A Roller Coaster
Riding a roller coaster can evoke many different emotions. One may experience feelings that range from fear and anxiety to joy and exhilaration. Our emotions are fickle. Sometimes life can feel like a roller coaster as we encounter wins and losses possibly even in the same day.
David and his men had experienced relief due to being pardoned from the battle against their own people. They were most likely exhausted from the trip and looking forward to the joyous welcome of their families only to find nothing but smoke and ruin upon arrival.
Can you imagine how they must have felt?
Have you ever lost a loved one unexpectedly?
What about a house fire?
Maybe you lost your job and felt helpless or a flood destroyed everything.
Complete desolation. That was the scene that David walked into. They didn’t know if their families were still alive and if they were, the possibilities were unimaginable.
Grief is a tricky emotion that can take you on a roller coaster ride.
Even the bravest person is not immune to disaster and grief.
The question is how do we respond after the initial reaction?
Our response will be based on our faith and relationship with our Savior.
That’s why it is so important to prepare our hearts through prayer on a regular basis.
Emotions will take you for a ride, but faith in Jesus will sustain you even in the darkest times.
Action Step
Prepare your heart through communication with God. Pray without ceasing. That means to live in relationship with Jesus. Thinking about Him all throughout your day. Talk to Him about the mundane tasks and laugh with Him as you do them.
That is prayer.
