Day1
Week22
1Samuel 14
“Then one of the people answered, and said, “Your father surely made the people swear, saying, ‘Cursed is the man that eats any food this day.’ ” And the people were weary. Then said Jonathan, “My father has troubled the land. See how my eyes have brightened, because I tasted a little of this honey. How much more, if the people had surely eaten freely today of the spoil of their enemies which they found? But now the defeat of the Philistines has not been great.””

A Form Of Godliness
Has pride ever gotten the best of you?
Jonathan has done a great thing in following the Lord and defeating the garrison with God’s help.
He unknowingly disobeyed his father, the kings’ orders.
At this point he hasn’t done anything wrong.
Then Jonathan opens his mouth and disrespects his father in order to defend himself.
You may be thinking
“Jonathan is right, Saul made a rash decision and it was bad.”
You would be right, but Jonathan was not the king and his defiant response is not one of humility but, self-preservation.
Have you ever pointed out your bosses errors when you were called out or as a child, told on your sibling to take the heat off of yourself?
This is pride. A humble response would be to admit your error and apologize. Also keeping your opinion to yourself.
Saul made a stupid decision, but Jonathan also made a poor choice and now the people are put in a position where they don’t know who to follow.
The zealous pride of Saul or the rebellious pride of Jonathan.
Our ways seem right in our own eyes, but we must remember that God’s ways are very different from ours and He has our best interest at heart.
Action Step
Think of a time that you may have spoken out of pride.
Ask Holy Spirit to help you understand what you could have done differently.
Allow Holy Spirit to prompt you the next time you are tempted to do defend yourself at the expense of another. If you fail, repent.
No condemnation, just make it right and move on.
Let Mercy be your guide.
