A Foreshadow
Samuel, Hebrew Shmuʾel, (flourished 11th century BCE, Israel), religious hero in the history of Israel, represented in the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) in every role of leadership open to a Jewish man of his day—seer, priest, judge, prophet, and military leader. He also was the founder of the school for the sons of the prophets and thus, a teacher as well.
There is a great sadness when a world or even national leader and hero dies. This is the tone we feel here in the passage.
Samuel’s life was extraordinary. All the great leaders in the Old Testament were a foreshadow of the coming Messiah, Jesus.
Samuel trained up others to do what he did. Jesus trained up 12 disciples to go out and do what He did.( actually many more, but 12 in close proximity).
Samuel was a mediator between God and the people. They did not have direct access to hear from God as we do.
Jesus gave us each the ability to do what He did and greater things.
Just like the disciples, we have to study and learn of Him. Matthew 11:28-30 says, “…take up My yoke and learn of Me…”
Samuel established a school and Jesus established The Church.
He is the head and we are His body.
What are we doing as students of our King?
Action Step

Set a timer for 5 minutes and sit quietly listening for direction.
Write down the thoughts or pictures that come to mind.
As you go about your day, look for the people or things that came to mind and pray for them when you find them.
